چکیده

Nitrogen fertilizer applications, for maximum fertilizer efficiencies and crop yields, should be based on the N required by the crop during its various growth stages. The objectives of this paper were to identify the N requirements of the potato plant (Solarium tuberosurn L.) during growth and to evaluate selected soil and plant tissue tests as indicators of the plant's N status. Growth analysis data and soil and petiole NO,-N concentrations were obtained at predetermined time intervals from N fertilization treatments in replicated field studies on a coarse-silty mixed, mesic Durixerollic Calciorthrid soil. Maximum early tuber growth occurred when leaf area index was between 2.5 and 3.2 and the tops contained between 79 and 100 kg N ha-' at the start of linear tuber growth. A preplant N fertilizer application between 67 and 134 kg ha-' gave these characteristics under the experimental conditions. The maximum dry matter production rate per day (approx. 250 kg ha-') occurred when there was between 80 and 140 kg N ha-' in the plant tops and roots. An average tuber growth rate of 0.75 Mg ha-' day1 required a N uptake rate of 3.7 kg ha-' day-' to prevent the loss of N and dry matter from the tops and roots. Sufficient N was available for this rate when the soil NOr N concentration was > 7.5 mg kg-' (0.46-m soil depth), corresponding to 15 000 mg kg-' NOrN in the fourth petiole. Soil and petiole NOrN concentrations may be used to adjust the N fertilization rates during the growing season. This practice has the potential of increasing the overall N fertilizer use efficiency and final tuber yields within the climatic, disease, and variety limitations. Interaction of different irrigation strategies and soil textures on the nitrogen uptake of field grown potatoes

Nitrogen (N) uptake (kg ha-1) of field-grown potatoes was measured in 4.32 m2 lysimeters that were filled with coarse sand, loamy sand, and sandy loam and subjected to full (FI), deficit (DI), and partial root-zone drying (PRD) irrigation strategies. PRD and DI as water-saving irrigation treatments received 65% of FI after tuber bulking and lasted for six weeks until final harvest. Results show...

Water-saving irrigation strategies affect tuber water relations and nitrogen content of potatoes

The dynamic and static deficit (DDI, SDI), partial root drying (DPRD, SPRD) and full (FI)irrigation strategies were applied in Agria and Ramos potato cultivars in a semi-arid area. FIreceived 100% of the potential evapotranspiration (ET); SDI and SPRD received 75% of ETduring the growth period; DDI and DPRD received 90% of ET in the first third, 75% of ET inthe second third and 50% of ET in the...

Comparison of the protein nutritional value of food blends based on sorghum, bambara groundnut and sweet potatoes.

The protein quality of four blends based on sprouted sorghum, bambara groundnuts and fermented sweet potatoes had been evaluated by rat feeding experiments; casein served as a reference protein. The test proteins were incorporated to make up 1.6% total nitrogen. There was an inverse relationship between % nitrogen disgestibility and the proportion of sorghum protein in the blend; being highest ...

Ipomcein, a Globulin from Sweet Potatoes, Ipomcea Batatas Isolation of a Secondary Protein Derived from Ipomcein by Enzymic Action

As far as we are aware, there are no data in the literature relative to the proteins of sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes rank second in importance as a truck crop in the United States and constitute one of the chief vegetable foods in the Southern States. Compared with other root vegetables they rank high in protein, the protein content ranging from 2 to 3.5 per cent. Sweet potatoes contain more ...

A Biochemical Study of Curing Processes in Sweet Potatoes.

If sweet potatoes are to be stored for any leilgth of time they must be subjected immediately after digging to a suitable combination of temperature and humidity for effective curing of the roots. The physiology of curing is imperfectly understood because of our limited information of the essential chemical changes in the roots during curing,. Previous studies have been confined chiefly to carb...
